Introduction

Welcome to The Sounds of Scottish Gaelic. This is an online version built on the lessons written by Prof. Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh, who formerly lectured at Edinburgh University and taught students the sounds of Gaelic. Gaelic is a rather complex language from the point of its phonology and even though it might seem troublesome, there is a point to studying the proper pronunciation – unless one would like to keep the "Blas na Beurla" – your "English accent".

Here you will get both explanations of how to produce these sounds and sound files of them (MP3). The lessons are divided into 13 sections which you will find in the navbar below. Click on a section, read the instructions and listen to the sound files.
